SOURCE OVERVIEW

My F block humanities class went through World War III when we were told to choose a class question. It was the biggest debate between two different questions, “What form of education is important to survive in our society? And what will happen if people lack a certain form of education?” Finally World War III ended when a voice of reason, Sabrina Hernandez, spoke up and suggested that we put the two questions together. She said we should make it “What form of education is important to survive in our society and what will happen if we lack this form of education”. We were later informed that we were supposed to take this question and shape it into what we what to write about. I came up with “Why is teen pregnancy and STDs education important in our society and what will happen if you lack this form of education”.

I chose this question because answering this question isn’t just for a grade in this class; it’s on a personal level. The main race that teen pregnancy is affecting is the Hispanic race, and my question was always, why? So I strongly believe that through this PAR paper, my question will be answered. I believe that if I think about it enough, I can come up with a reason on why all of this is happening. I also believe that I can come up with a way to fix these problems that are affecting not only Hispanic youth but all types of youth around Boston.

To help with this paper I had to answer my question using two different types of sources, primary and secondary. For my primary source I used the interviews that I did at HOPE, surveys that I passed out, and the GIS map that I made. The interviews gave me a chance to talk to employees that have to work with youth that are affected and infected with STDs and youth that are victims of teen pregnancy. In other words they have a chance to speak with people that know someone with an STD; they also get to talk to people that have an STD.

For my class I was asked to find two secondary sources, one for each part of my question, teen pregnancy and STDs. I went on line and I found two great articles that included a couple of graphs. One was Sexual Risk and Protective Factors by Douglas Kirby, Gina Lepore, and Jennifer Ryan. They focused a lot on cons when it comes to youth and sex; a lot of reasons why they shouldn’t and things that may happen if they do end up doing it. The second secondary source I found was entitles National Surveillance Data for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis; by the centers for disease control and prevention (CDC). This is an excellent article because it helps narrow down the amount of people that have certain STDs, and where around the United States they live; this article focus on three different STDs, race, and gender.

The first article was very helpful because it focus neither STDs nor teen pregnancy, the article had a little bit of the both in it. This article explained to its readers what will happen if a young person were to have sex and not think about the decision that they are making. It explained a little bit about love and lust and why youth don’t really have the time to think; it also said a little bit about youth dropping out of school because of some bad decisions they managed to make.
