FIELD NOTES/OBSERVATIONS

I collected are very strong useful information, and a lot of history on DSNI. For the first day, I took notes on all my first instincts of from when I walked in, until when I left. When I first went to DSNI it was very quiet, because all the employees don’t arrive until 10, and I got there at nine o’clock. Soon as I walked through the door I could smell the fresh scent of coffee, and it woke me up for the day. I was introduced to Ros, and Travis and the rest of the DSNI workers.

watching the movie

  • The movie was very shocking, because I couldn’t imagine this neighborhood looking that way. In the movie it showed how many people segregated, black people were moving out, houses being abandoned, houses being burned down for money, children being dragged out of flames, and large trash pills behind or in front of every house.

  • houses were being burned down for money, and it brought tears to my eyes seeing families suffer, and just thinking that could’ve been me and my family. In the movie it showed how it was getting out of hand , so many different people that lived in the neighborhood started coming together, because they couldn’t have there children growing up in such poverty.

  • They started organizing campaigns , door knocking, and surveys on ways they can make changes in the community, and getting more families involved with changing there communities. They came up with a campaign “Don’t Dump on Us” which was basically saying that they are tired of the city dumping millions of trash on there property, making there neighborhood look like a dump.

  • The multicultural festival was a way for all people from the community to come out and celebrate the change, there was different cultured food, many types of music being played, cake, and everyone having an exciting time. They painted a mural to represent the community capturing everything, and I have to say every time I pass by that mural it makes me proud to see how this community has survived the hardships.

At the end of the movie I realized why they wanted me to watch this video, because after I viewed DSNI differently and honestly I took it more seriously.
