We first came up with our class general topic: how do social and cultural values affect Boston youth? And then the class overarching research question: how do social/cultural environments and expectations affect the success of Boston youth? From this I was able for a question derived from these two questions combined, thinking about what I really wanted to find out and learn about Boston youth when it comes to education and how it affects them. So I thought what I would like to really know, and that is where I started. At first it was difficult because I couldn’t find a stable question it kept changing. It even changed when in was on my internship. So that was difficult. As soon as I got this research question that was stable and that I had complete confidence in, and was excited to do research, I knew that all was going to smoothly and successful from then on. I was able to make truly thee perfect questions to gather data for my research question. Since my team and I had the same research question I felt that that was the most successful part, because we were able to split up and share our work with each other, both comparing and contrasting each others data. We basically worked with each other, yet worked separately. I think something that I would do differently is getting a stable research question from the beginning. I was told that it would be hard to come up with a stable research question and that others always manage to change their research question throughout the research period. But I think if one was to get a stable question from the beginning it would be much easier, because then you would have enough time to derive research interview questions and surveys, and you wouldn’t have to be changing and coming up with new questions at the site. In other words you would be more prepared. As a researcher I learned that if I put my mind to something I could do the best job that I can do. I also learned that I am better at PAR research than regular traditional research. Just think I was afraid, shy and doubting myself in what I would be able to achieve doing PAR research, because I am, well at least I thought, I was the kind of person who cannot at any expense be around too much people. And look, when I got there I gained an incredible amount of confidence not only in what I could do, but also in myself. It felt amazing. Throughout the PAR process I learnt that it is actually better to get out there and do the actual research, than to sit in front of a computer or read books. It really gets the researcher involved in the actual process of gathering the data needed for the research question. If this type of research is done by youth, I think there’s better chances that youth would get to see and feel all the affects of researching to cause effect, and would want to do it, and be a part of making change. With this they will become true activists, and be able to pass it on to other youth, getting them involved in the world of being an activist for change.
