Section VI- Data Analysis and Findings

    In my observations on site at Boston Plan for Excellence I observed a great deal, including the environment how the area was and how the employees conducted themselves. When I was first sent to the site I was supposed to go to the Mather School so that I could observe the teachers that had graduated from the program, but instead I went to the site Boston Plan for Excellence. There I was greeted and treated like apart of the community. As time went on I was then given some information on the program and what it was.

            As I reviewed the information I also observed the surroundings and how the employees interacted with their surroundings. At BPE everyone has his or her own desk, telephone, and laptops. They also, are people that attend to their assigned work area, and they made sure that they attended to their work as they were supposed to. The area is a very quiet and a excellent place to do work due to the quietness. Overall, the site was a very clean and excellent place to do work, and the employees all seem as though they take great care of the area.

            Once I met with Monique, my mentor at the site as well as an employee of B.P.E and one of my classmates we were we met with then sent to a conference room where the director of the program Boston's Teachers Residency Donnell Williams and the recruiter Monique. In the conference room we were told about the program, and they explained to us about the program, and why we were placed in at the site. This was something that was very helpful, but then questions begin to form in my head about what kind of people were in the program, and where they ended up once they graduated from the program.

            The following week Monique and Donnell assisted me with my project they were able to fill me in on come more information about the program that I didn't know, which came in hand when I begun to start my project. I still had some questions on how the teachers became teachers, and what they did once they graduated. That answer was soon answered at the last time I visited the site. Donnell Williams took me along with two other classmates to the new pilot school on Columbia Road where two of the programs graduates ended up. There I observed the difference in teaching from two first year teachers. This was very helpful, because I was able to answer the question on whether or the not the teachers were being equipped enough to teach. This was something that I felt as though I was able to answer, because by being in the school atmosphere I was able to observe, and answer that yes they are being equipped enough to teach, at least the teachers that are graduating from the program are being equipped enough to teach. This was a very critical incident that occurred, because I was able to be exposed to the graduates, and I was able to compare and contrast the two different atmospheres of the classrooms, and this was something that I thought was important to have been exposed to, because I got to see what the teachers learned, and how they were able to use that in the classrooms amongst their pupils.

Then a question came into my head about the other teacher programs those are around? Are they teaching to the standards, and if not why are they around? This goes into another subject, but overall I can say that the site helped a great deal with my project as well as from answering questions that I had.

Interview/ Focus Group

When I first I thought about who I was going to interview, it took me a long time to decide, who would be the right candidates. I thought about who would give me responses that I could use in my paper that would have an impact on me as well as my readers, and that's when it dawned on me to talk to my boyfriend. He had gone to excellent school that' wasn’t public, which is what I was trying to aim for. I knew a great deal of people that I could've interviewed like teachers, and people from the Boston Plan for Excellence organization, but I wanted to go for the people that had been affected by the resource issues amongst the schools. Seeing that he attended well resourced schools I thought that it would be an excellent idea for me to interview him to see whether or not he cared about the other less fortunate schools that didn't receive the same amount of resources. The last reason that made me want to choice him was because society tends to think that black males aren't capable of completing school, and he did. Plus, I predicted that he didn't care about whether or not the other schools received any resources and I wanted to see if I was right. <!-- D(["mb","<span\> </span\>This was because I thought that they didn't care, because I though that kids that attended those </font\></p\>
<p style="margin:0in 0in 0pt;line-height:200%"\><font face="Times New Roman"\>types of schools where kids that thought they were better then Public student kids, and I was wrong for putting that stereotype upon them, and that was wrong of me.
</font\></p\>
<p style="margin:0in 0in 0pt;line-height:200%"\><font face="Times New Roman"\> </font\></p\>
<div style="border-right:medium none;padding-right:0in;border-top:medium none;padding-left:0in;padding-bottom:1pt;border-left:medium none;padding-top:0in;border-bottom:windowtext 1.5pt solid"\>

<p style="border-right:medium none;padding-right:0in;border-top:medium none;padding-left:0in;padding-bottom:0in;margin:0in 0in 0pt;border-left:medium none;line-height:200%;padding-top:0in;border-bottom:medium none"\>
<font face="Times New Roman"\><span\> </span\>Now, that I had my interviewees I know needed my questions.<span\> </span\>I didn't want to go to deep because that not what I wanted to do. Now, that I had my interviewee only mentioned one I know needed my questions. I didn't want to go to deep because that not what I wanted to do. I just wanted to get to the center of the question, and that was do they feel as though every school deserved resources, because I already thought that they needed them, but wanted to see what they thought, so I tried to stay around that area with my questions. Then they came into my head, and they were,

When I thought about it and looked at the questions I thought that maybe I might to the point that I wanted to get through these questions, and then I thought hey I have to wait until I get to the interviews, and see what the interviewees say. Then that will be the point in time when I will be able to see was my prediction true or false.

            First, I interviewed my boyfriend; he had were very powerful responses to my questions. <!-- D(["mb","<span\> </span\>He himself had attended North Cambridge Catholic High School, and he had a great to say about education then compared to his friends education in Public schools.<span\>
  </span\>Being a black male the society tends to think that you don't care about education, and that not the case with all black male and he proved that in his interview. "Education is Knowledge, and without education you can't get anywhere", is what Markus had to say about education when I asked him about it.
<span\> </span\>This was something that I thought he wouldn't say, because I had placed this stereotype upon him that society has already on him and this was wrong of me.<span\>
  </span\>As the interview went on he then went on to say "that many people including his friends thought that he was a rich black kid, because he attended a Catholic school outside the hood."<span\>
  </span\>This was the was something that I was looking forward to finding out, because this is how I felt about students that attended highly resourced schools, and he cleared that up for me once he said, that "I didn't consider myself as a rich black kid, his mother just wanted him to attend an excellent school, and that wasn't his fault, or had anything to do with him being a snob or anything of that sort."
<span\>  </span\></font\></p\>
<p style="margin:0in 0in 0pt;line-height:200%"\><font face="Times New Roman"\><span\> </span\>As the interview went on I then asked the question about whether or not, which schools receive all or most of the resources', and who they feel as though deserves the resources and why.
<span\>  </span\></font\></p\>
<p style="margin:0in 0in 0pt;line-height:200%"\><b\><i\><span style="font-size:11pt;line-height:200%"\><font face="Times New Roman"\>
"I believe that private schools and Suburban schools are the ones that receive all the resources'. I feel as though everyone should be able to be exposed to resources meaning every school deserves all of the resources. This is unfair, and then you tend to make hatred amongst all of the students and the schools, and make one feel as though they are inferior to another, and this shouldn't be the case." Markus Williams
",1] ); //--> He had attended North Cambridge Catholic High School, and had great to say about education. He then compared his own education to his friend’s education in Public schools. Being a black male, society tends to think that you don't care about education. He proved is not the case. "Education is Knowledge, and without education you can't get anywhere," is what Markus had to say about education when I asked him about it. This was something that I thought he wouldn't say, because I had placed this stereotype upon him that society has already on him and this was wrong of me.

As the interview went on he then went on to say that many people including his friends thought that he was a rich black kid, because he attended a Catholic school outside the hood. This was something that I was looking forward to finding out, because this is how I felt about students that attended highly resourced schools, and he cleared that up for me once he said that He didn't consider myself a rich black kid, his mother just wanted him to attend an excellent school, and that wasn't his fault, or had anything to do with him being a snob or anything of that sort.

            As the interview went on I then asked the question about, which schools receive most of the resources, and who they feel as though deserves the resources and why.

"I believe that private schools and Suburban schools are the ones that receive all the resources'. I feel this way, because I've had friends, who attended public schools like I stated before, and they told me that they wished that they attended my school, and that was because they felt as though we had most of the resources, and that was something that I thought wasn't the case, until I visited one of the school, and seen it for myself. It was a horrible site, and I thought how could people even learn in this environment, and if they had to how could they do it, because I wouldn't be able to do it. That's when I realized why my friends hated me so much, and this wasn't my fault though. I feel as though everyone should be able to be exposed to resources meaning every school deserves all of the resources. This is unfair, and then you tend to make hatred amongst all of the students and the schools, and make one feel as though they are inferior to another, and this shouldn't be the case." Markus William (interviewee)

            After the interview was complete I then began to think about the responses that I received. They began to prove my predictions wrong, and answered my question that I had for my paper. He let me know that not all students and people that attend more resourced schools feel as though they are better those in the less fortunate schools, in actuality he proved to me that some students that attend those types of school know that they are given, all the resources, but they do feel bad for those that aren't being given resources. This is something that made me rethink how I felt about those who attend certain types of schools.

            The person that interviewed did indeed help me answer my question, because they didn't day that they felt as though it was the teachers fault but that it was the fact that the schools weren't being exposed to enough resources to use so that they could teach their students. This was something that I didn't think about, because of course the teacher must have ideas, and things that they want to with the students, but if they don't have the resources to do it, then that doesn't mean that they are the reason why the school doesn't have the a better performance rate from the students. This what I got from the interviewee, and this made me feel real in good, because I had got what I was looking for, and he helped me finish that. I was glad that I had interviewed him.
