Section III. Source Overview

“The results are in…you’re HIV positive.” These dreadful words are heard everyday to people all over the world. Teens are getting infected with HIV and STD’s, and it could all be prevented with effective programs, and people that are willing to teach the youth about how to protect themselves during sexual activities. How knowledgeable are youth, and how effective are the programs to educate them?

            In my PAR process I used many sources, which were previous researches, surveys, and basic information I found on the internet. I didn’t get as many primary sources as I intended, because I wasn’t able to do as much as I had planned at my site due to problems that kept coming up like not being able to complete the hours I needed at the site, but I was still able to find valuable information that helped prove my research.

     According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “In 2005, 38,096 cases of HIV/AIDS in adults, adolescents, and children were diagnosed in the 33 states…approximately 40,000 persons in the United States become infected with HIV each year.” This number can be reduced, and should be targeted immediately. The first reported incident of AIDS was in 1981. Since then, 900,000 cases have been reported. “AIDS affects nearly seven times more African Americans and three times more Hispanics than whites. In recent years, an increasing number of African-American women and children are being affected by HIV/AIDS. In 2003, two-thirds of U.S. AIDS cases in both women and children were among African-Americans.” This is an interesting fact considering that the highest numbers of infections are among minorities that usually live in poverty. This may be a reason why they are more likely to be at risk. Also in urban areas recourses are limited due to the lack of funding, which results in lack of programs therefore urban
