 Requirements at CBO sites

  • field notes throughout the day

  • reflections immediately after the day was over

  • to shadow someone who actaully knew their way around

  • to collect papers about the site

 Patterns

  • noticed that: all students bragged about the positive qualities of their school, all had the same missions but different ways to get to that goal, and all the schools I visited gave their students a nice amount of freedom.

  • field notes helped me explain that urban public, private, and suburban public are ignorant of each other because when I asked what they though about the other schools, they would answer by using “he” and “she” said, not with percents or actual experience.

Key Incidents

  • Fenway: Sister 2 Sister awareness assembly
  • Ran by students and extremely successful

 

  • Concord Academy: Throughout the school, we would see heaps of book bags just let unattended
  • I never really thought about how badly students not only at our schools but at all BPS schools are traumatized due to stealing

 

  • Brookline Academy: English class teacher took time out of the class to tell the students that her class would be cancelled for two or three days and that they had that time to go to other places and do what was needed
  • This surprised me because if a teacher was absent, we would have to go to that class and would have to do sub work.
